whole wheat ?

I have been reading couple of books regarding diet for people with fibromyalgia. I am confused about some of the article in it. One book says that brown rice and multi grain is good but whole wheat is bad and the other book says it is okay. Which is correct? I have been eating whole wheat bread and pasta for a while now. Should I continue eating whole wheat or should I change it to bread made with Spelt?

There is no real consensus as to whether whole wheat should be eaten or avoided, especially for someone that suffers from fibromyalgia. There are a couple of reasons that avoiding wheat is often recommended: 1) wheat contains phytic acid which can bind up free minerals and impede absorption and 2) it contains gluten, a component that causes food sensitivities in many people and is associated with some autoimmune disorders.

The other side to the argument is that real whole wheat contains many nutrients in the germ and also a good amount of fiber. Please make sure to distinguish between real whole wheat and the highly-processed breads that claim to be whole wheat but use most processed wheat flour. I think that the most logical course of action is to eliminate all wheat for a time and see if you feel a difference in your health and a reduction in symptoms. If this is the case, you probably should avoid wheat and other gluten-containing grains as much as possible. If nothing happens, you could eat moderate amount of real whole wheat bread, preferably an organic brand that uses sprouted grains. Regarding the phytic acid, I would not take my supplements with a meal that contains a lot of wheat. It is interesting to note that this can also be taken as a supplement for its anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties.
